The Giver in Charity with no Limits

During the time of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, in Al-Madeenah there was a man who was tall, broad-shouldered, bright-faced, and very rich.

He was a successful merchant and his trade brought him abundant wealth to the extent that he used to say: “It seems to me that if I

were to raise a stone, I would find gold and silver beneath it!”

This was the prominent companion (sahaabiy) `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, who embraced Islam when he was young. He was one of the first eight people who embraced Islam.

`Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, was tormented and oppressed by the Quraysh just like all the early Muslims, but he endured it and remained patient. He migrated to Abyssinia along with some of the Muslims. Then he emigrated to Al-Madeenah where he settled.

`Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, fought with the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, in the two well-known battles of Badr and Uhud as well as in other battles. In the Battle of Uhud he suffered about twenty wounds, some of his teeth were broken so his pronunciation was negatively affected, and one of his two legs was injured so after this he was lame.

`Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, was one of the close companions of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam. He also set a good example of a faithful Muslim who grew as a Muslim and was educated at the hands of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, himself.

Amazingly enough, the richer this man became, the more he would feel afraid. That was because he feared that he might be included in the following words of Allaah (which mean):

“On the Day when those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allaah; Islamic Monotheism) will be exposed to the Fire (it will be said): ‘You received your good things in the life of the world, and you took your pleasure therein. Now this Day you shall be recompensed with a torment of humiliation, because you were arrogant in the land without a right, and because you used to rebel and disobey (Allaah).” (Quran: 46: 20)

`Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, used to fear the reckoning on the Day of Resurrection, because he knew that the more property a person possessed, the more reckoning he would receive.

Moreover, `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, was one of the believers who would listen to the Word (good advice, and so on.) and follow the best thereof (i.e., worship Allaah alone, repent to Him, avoid evil, and so on). For this reason, he used to give in charity out of his wealth with no limits, as a way of praising and showing gratitude to Allaah for His favors and blessings. As a result, Allaah would double and multiply his property for him, as Allaah says (what means):

“…If you give thanks, I will give you more (of My Blessings)…” (Quran: 14:7)

Once `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, was sitting with the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, when a man came and told him that his caravan, which was in the Levant had returned with loads of goods for which the people had been waiting.

On hearing that, `Abdur-Rahmaan smiled and thanked the man then asked the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, to allow him to check on the caravan.

`Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Awf,may Allaah be pleased with him, went to his caravan, which was very large, and saw that merchants had already crowded around it. He heard their loud voices as they were competing with one another to buy what they needed, increasing the prices.

`Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, remembered Allaah’s blessings that He had bestowed upon him and the abundant provisions He had given him. He also remembered that he had received all those good things as a result of Allaah’s blessings and not because of his own cleverness and skillful marketing. Thereupon `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, decided to do something but he kept it secret. He left the merchants who had crowded around his caravan and did not listen to what they said. He ordered his men to take the caravan to where the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, was sitting.

The Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, and those who were with him heard a lot of noise, so he sent someone to find out what was going on. The man returned with `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, who was leading his caravan. Once he sat before the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, he declared that he had given his entire caravan in charity for the cause of Allaah.

The face of the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, brightened as he smiled with pleasure because of what `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, had done. The Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, invoked Allaah for him and gave him glad tidings of Paradise.

Before he died, `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Awf, may Allaah be pleased with him, gave fifty thousand Deenaars (gold coins), by will, as charity in the cause of Allaah. He also bequeathed four hundred Deenaars to each one who would be alive (after his death) from those who participated in the Battle of Badr. Caliph `Uthmaan Ibn `Affaân, may Allaah be pleased with him, was one of those who took his share of that will.

In the 32nd year after the Prophet’s emigration to Al-Madeenah and during the caliphate of `Uthmaan Ibn 'Affaan, may Allaah be pleased with him, `Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn `Awf died when he was 75 years old. May Allaah be pleased with him as well as with all the Prophet’s Companions!
